By the Gamecodely editorial team · Updated

Backrooms: Impending Doom is scheduled for January 20, 2027 on Steam (Windows PC), launching in Early Access. That is the planned release date on the game’s official Steam page, where developer and publisher FD Team also offer a free Prologue demo (live since August 30, 2026). FD Team expects the game to stay in Early Access for about 12 months, so the finished 1.0 version is further out. No console or Mac version has been announced, and the exact unlock time on launch day hasn’t been published yet.

Release date vs. full release (Early Access explained)

January 20, 2027 is the Early Access launch. On the store page, FD Team says:

  • They expect the game to stay in Early Access for around 12 months, depending on development and community feedback.
  • The Early Access build is already playable with the core gameplay loop. Expect bugs and unfinished parts while systems are still being tuned.
  • The full version is planned to add more content, events, systems and polish: new locations, threats and mechanics.
  • The price may go up as development goes on.

The store page also says the full game will be released in episodes (Episode 1 and Episode 2) and will replace the demo on the page. Wishlisting is described as the way to be “among the first to play Episode 1 when it releases.”

The free Prologue demo

  • The Backrooms: Impending Doom – Demo is a separate free Steam app (released August 30, 2026).
  • FD Team calls it the complete Prologue: the story’s opening, the core mechanics, and your first encounter with the mystery.
  • Five “NOCLIP” hotfixes (v1–v5) went out between August 30 and September 3, 2026. They fixed lighting, triggers and localization, and reduced stamina use when running and jumping.
  • Get it only from the official Steam demo page. We don’t host downloads.

What kind of game is it?

Backrooms: Impending Doom is a first-person psychological horror game about a research expedition that disappeared inside Level 0 of the Backrooms. You follow their trail through yellow corridors, technical passages and unstable spaces. It has two key systems:

  • Stamina, which runs out faster than you’d expect.
  • Synchronization, your connection to reality, which weakens the longer you stay.

The story is told through the environment, a terminal, classified records and incident dossiers. The developer says the game relies on disorientation, silence and sound design instead of cheap jump scares.
