Steam error E502 L2 ("Something went wrong. We were unable to service your request. Please try again later.") means Steam's store servers couldn't answer your request. It's almost always a problem on Valve's side, not your PC. It hit the Steam Store worldwide on October 21, 2026, during Steam Next Fest. The store failed in both the Steam app and the browser, while libraries, downloads and online games kept working, and it came back the same day. E502 L3 is the same kind of error and is seen more often, especially at checkout. Use the live check above to see whether Steam answers right now. If it doesn't, wait and don't reinstall. If you were buying something, check your purchase history before paying again.
What E502 L2 and E502 L3 mean
| Code | What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| E502 L2 | "Something went wrong. We were unable to service your request. Please try again later." | The Steam Store couldn't answer. This was the code during the October 21, 2026 store outage. |
| E502 L3 | The same message, often on store pages or at checkout | The most commonly reported variant: a store or payment server didn't answer in time. |
| E503 L1 | Similar message when buying | Players report it at checkout during busy periods; the service is temporarily unavailable. |
"502" is the web's Bad Gateway error: a server in Valve's network didn't get a valid answer from the server behind it. Valve doesn't document what the L1, L2 and L3 suffixes mean, so treat them as the same family. None of them means your account is banned or limited.
The October 21, 2026 Steam store outage
- What broke: the Steam Store, in the desktop app and on the web. Pages showed E502 L2 instead of loading.
- What kept working: your library, installed games, game downloads and updates, and online play.
- When: October 21, 2026, in the middle of Steam Next Fest (about 8,000 demos), so players couldn't browse or grab new demos for a while.
- Fixed: the store came back the same day. Valve hasn't given a reason.
Is it Steam or is it me?
- Run the live check at the top of this page. If the Steam Store isn't answering from our server either, it's an outage. Wait 15–30 minutes.
- Try another device or network. Open store.steampowered.com on your phone using mobile data. If it works there, the problem is on your PC or home connection.
- Look at what still works. If your games launch and download but store pages fail, it's the store service, not your internet.
Fixes to try once Steam is up again
Only try these if the live check says Steam is answering but you still get E502:
- Fully restart Steam. Use Steam → Exit (and close it from the system tray), then reopen it.
- Delete the Steam app's web data. Go to Steam → Settings → In Game → Delete Web Browser Data, then restart. Store pages in the app are web pages, so a stale cache can keep showing the error.
- Clear the download cache. Go to Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Cache. You'll need to sign in again, but your games stay installed.
- Turn off VPN, proxy and ad-block for Steam, then retry.
- Restart your router. On Windows, also run
ipconfig /flushdnsin Command Prompt.
Skip reinstalling Steam or deleting game folders. They don't fix a server-side error and can cost you long re-downloads.
Got E502 while buying a game?
- Don't press Purchase again yet. Open your Steam purchase history and see whether the order is complete, pending or failed.
- Pending or complete: don't pay again. A pending order completes or cancels on its own. If something looks wrong, contact Steam Support from that purchase entry.
- Failed: try again once the store loads normally.
- Not listed at all: wait 10–15 minutes and refresh your purchase history before you try again; a payment can take a moment to appear.
- Wallet funds and items in your inventory aren't lost when the store or Community pages fail to load.
Steam Deck
Restart the Deck (Steam button → Power → Restart), check that Wi-Fi has internet access, and try the Store again. You can keep playing installed games, offline if needed, until the store is back.

Frequently asked questions
What does Steam error E502 L2 mean?
It means a Steam store server couldn't answer your request (502 Bad Gateway). It's a server-side problem at Valve, not a ban and usually not your PC. It appeared worldwide during the Steam store outage of October 21, 2026.
Is E502 L2 the same as E502 L3?
They're the same family of errors. Valve doesn't explain the L suffix. E502 L3 is reported most often, especially on store pages and at checkout. E502 L2 was the code shown in the October 21, 2026 outage.
Is Steam down right now?
Use the live check at the top of this page. It asks the Steam Store, Steam Community and Steam Web API from our server when you press Check Steam now (one result is shared for up to 60 seconds). If the Store isn't answering for us either, it's an outage, so wait instead of changing settings.
How do I fix Steam error E502 L3?
First confirm Steam is up. Then restart Steam fully, delete the app's web browser data (Settings → In Game), clear the download cache (Settings → Downloads), turn off VPN/proxy and restart your router. Reinstalling Steam doesn't help with a server error.
I got E502 during checkout. Was I charged?
Check Account details → View purchase history before you pay again. If the purchase is pending or complete, don't pay again. Pending orders complete or cancel on their own. Retry only if it shows as failed. If it isn't listed yet, wait 10–15 minutes and refresh before paying again.
Can I still play my games when the Steam store shows E502?
Usually yes. During the October 21, 2026 outage, libraries, installed games, downloads, updates and online play kept working. Only the store pages failed.
Why did Steam go down on October 21, 2026?
Valve hasn't said. The outage happened during Steam Next Fest, and Valve hasn't published a cause.
Does E502 mean my Steam account is banned?
No. E502 errors are server errors. Account restrictions show different messages on your account page.
